Last November 21, in Paris,
representatives of over 30 countries signed a Pact to make a
fusion reactor, the International Thermonuclear Experimental
Reactor (ITER). This experimental reactor aims at promoting
research and development of a future reactor that will provide
a clean and cheap source of energy, offering a definite alternative
for fossil fuels. The ITER Project will invest 12 billion Euro
in 35 years and it will be built in Cadarache, South of France.
The agreement was
signed by President Jacques Chirac and representatives
of the European Union, USA, Japan, India, Russia, South
Korea and China, setting the path for a Project with a
long background. In particular, several technologies that
will be integrated on ITER have already been testes on
JET (Joint European Torus), Culham, UK, which
is a test rig and precursor of ITER.
